# Chapel Loop packing checklist

*   Activity**Day hike**
* Park**Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, MI**
*   Nearest**Wildcat Canyon, 381 mi**

A 10.5-mile loop on the shore of Lake Superior that passes 60-foot Chapel Falls, the sandstone tower of Chapel Rock and Chapel Beach, then follows the top of the Pictured Rocks cliffs to Mosquito Beach and returns past Mosquito Falls. Cliff edges, fast lake weather, black bears, fall hunting season, muddy stretches, no drinking water and a small lot at the end of a rough road are the main things to plan for.

## Trip details

Distance

10.5 mi (16.9 km) loop, including the side trip to Mosquito Falls

Elevation gain

The park doesn’t publish a figure. The trail runs on an old roadbed with several small hills, drops to lake level at Chapel Beach and Mosquito Beach, and climbs back to the clifftops

Route

From the Chapel/Mosquito trailhead, the trail passes Chapel Falls at 1.2 miles, reaches Chapel Rock and Chapel Beach at about 3 miles, then follows the Pictured Rocks cliffs east to the Mosquito River and Mosquito Beach. It returns to the lot on the inland trail past Mosquito Falls. You can hike it in either direction

Difficulty

The park doesn’t rate the full loop. It is a long day, with cliff edges and a usually very muddy, rough stretch on the Mosquito side. Plan on most of a day (our estimate)

Trailhead

Chapel/Mosquito trailhead at the end of Chapel Road, 5 miles north of Alger County Road H-58 and about 15 miles east of Munising. Seasonal vault toilet, no drinking water

Fees and permits

No permit for a day hike. Every visitor needs a park entrance pass: standard $15 to $25, annual $45. No cash

Hours

The park is open 24 hours, year-round. Chapel Road is closed to cars from December 1 to March 31, when it becomes a snowmobile route

Pets

Not allowed on any Chapel or Mosquito trail or beach

Best season

Late May to mid-October. Arrive before 9 am (our pick)

### Before you go

* **Check conditions and closures.** Look at [NPS Pictured Rocks: current conditions](https://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/conditions.htm) the day before. As of Oct 25, 2026, no closure is listed for Chapel Road or the Chapel and Mosquito trails. The Munising Falls Trail, elsewhere in the park, is closed until further notice after a washout.
* **Check the weather.** Lake Superior weather changes fast. Skip the cliff section in high wind, heavy rain or fog, and plan for cold rain in late fall. [NPS Pictured Rocks: weather](https://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/weather.htm)
* **Go early.** The trailhead lot often fills by 9 am in summer and early fall, and Chapel Road is slow going. Have a backup hike in mind. [NPS Pictured Rocks: Chapel Falls](https://www.nps.gov/places/chapel-falls.htm)
* **Tell someone your plan.** There is no cell service at the trailhead and little in much of the park, and rescues can take hours. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. In an emergency call 911, or text 911 if your signal is weak. [NPS Pictured Rocks: safety](https://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/safety.htm)
* **Watch the calendar.** From December 1 to March 31, Chapel Road is closed to all vehicles except snowmobiles. In late fall and spring, check with a visitor center for road closures before you drive in. [NPS Pictured Rocks: winter road closures](https://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/winter-road-closures.htm)
* **Know when to turn back.** Turn back if a storm is building, if the trail is too muddy or icy, if anyone in your group is struggling, or if you won’t finish before dark.

This list is a starting point, not a guarantee. Conditions change, so adjust it for your trip and your group.

### Trip-specific: permits and hazards

1. **Cliff edges, and stay off Chapel Rock**Between Chapel Beach and Mosquito Beach the loop runs along the top of the Pictured Rocks cliffs, and the park says to walk carefully along this edge. Stay on the trail and back from the edge, which can have loose soil, tripping hazards and undercut rock, and recent rock falls show it can give way. Take pictures, but don’t climb Chapel Rock, which can earn a hefty fine. Jumping from any rock or cliff more than 15 feet above the water is illegal.Need itHave it

2. **Rough road, small lot that fills early**Chapel Road is a rough 5-mile dirt road with deep potholes and washouts, ending at the trailhead. The lot fills quickly in summer and early fall, often by 9 am, so arrive early. From June 15 to September 15, vehicles over 36 feet, or vehicle and trailer combinations over 42 feet, aren’t allowed on the road. The park says to use its map rather than GPS or phone apps, which don’t work well here.Need itHave it

3. **Hunting season: wear hunter’s orange**Hunting can happen in the park from Labor Day through April 1, under state rules. The park says to wear hunter’s orange during this time, or at least bright colors.Need itHave it

4. **Black bear country**Black bears live in the park and are seen from time to time. Make noise as you hike, stay on the trail, and never feed bears or other wildlife. Don’t leave food or water bottles unattended at the beaches, pack out every scrap, and use the bear-proof trash cans. Report any bear encounter to the park at 906-387-3700.Need itHave it

5. **Fast Lake Superior weather**Lake Superior makes the weather change fast, with cool conditions and rain, and fog can happen in any season. October averages a high of 53°F and a low of 38°F, and November 40°F and 28°F. Snow usually covers the ground from late November. Pack a rain shell and warm layer even if the morning looks fine, and know the signs of hypothermia.Need itHave it

6. **Muddy trail and falling branches**The Mosquito Beach side of the loop is usually very muddy and rough, so wear sturdy, waterproof boots. Beech tree disease has left many dead and dying trees in the park, and strong winds can knock branches loose, so don’t linger under dead trees on a windy day.Need itHave it

7. **Wild parsnip, poison ivy, ticks and flies**Learn to spot wild parsnip, an invasive plant whose sap can cause serious chemical burns up to 48 hours after contact, and poison ivy. Ticks live in the park, so check yourself after the hike. Biting insects peak from late May through September, and black flies can also show up in cool fall weather. Bring insect repellent and long pants.Need itHave it

8. **Entrance pass, and no cash**Every visitor needs an entrance pass. A standard pass costs $15 to $25, an annual pass is $45, and America the Beautiful passes are accepted. The park doesn’t take cash, so buy your pass online before you go. No permit is needed for a day hike. You only need a backcountry permit if you plan to camp overnight.Need itHave it

10. **No drinking water, one toilet**There is no drinking water at the trailhead or on the loop, and the only vault toilet is at the parking lot. If you need to go on the trail, go 200 feet from any water, bury waste 6 to 8 inches deep, and pack out your toilet paper and all trash.Need itHave it

### The Ten Essentials [(NPS)](https://www.nps.gov/articles/10essentials.htm)

1. **Water: about 2 to 3 liters per person**The park says to bring plenty of water, and there is none at the trailhead or along the loop. For 10.5 miles on a cool fall day, we suggest 2 to 3 liters each, more if it is warm. Lake and river water must be treated before you drink it.Need itHave it

2. **Food and extra food**Bring enough food for a full day plus a little extra, as the park advises. Pack out all food and trash, and keep food with you so bears and other animals can’t get it.Need itHave it

3. **Navigation: map and compass**The park says to carry a map, compass or GPS and know how to use them, and to use the park map instead of phone apps. There is no cell service at the trailhead. Download or print the Chapel area map before you leave home.Need itHave it

4. **Headlamp**Fall days are short, and a 10.5-mile loop can take most of the day. A headlamp gets you to the car if you finish after dark, or helps with a pre-dawn start to get a parking spot. Your phone isn’t a headlamp.Need itHave it
