# Ledges Trail packing checklist

*   Activity**Day hike**
* Park**Cuyahoga Valley National Park, OH**
*   Nearest**Old Rag Circuit, 251 mi**

A 1.8-mile loop around a plateau of mossy sandstone cliffs, narrow cracks and overhangs in Ohio's only national park, with a west-facing overlook partway around. Rocky, slippery footing near the cliffs, ticks, short fall days with the lots closing at dusk, weekend crowds and car break-ins are the main things to plan for.

## Trip details

Distance

1.8 mi loop around the ledges plateau. Starting from Kendall Lake instead makes it at least 3 mi round trip

Elevation gain

At least 80 ft of up and down on rocky, unpaved trail

Route

From the Ledges Trailhead, walk the gated service drive past the Ledges Shelter or take the connector behind the bulletin board to the loop. Ledges Overlook is on the loop, or a short walk across the grassy playfield

Difficulty

Rocky and uneven. The park suggests it for ages 6 and up and says it takes about 1 to 2 hours

Trailhead

Ledges Trailhead, 701 Truxell Road, Peninsula, OH 44264. You can also start from Pine Grove, Happy Days Lodge or Kendall Lake

Fees and permits

None. Cuyahoga Valley has no entrance fee and no pass is needed

Hours

Open every day. The Ledges area and its lots close at dusk

Pets

On a leash no longer than 6 ft. Pick up after your pet

Best season

Year-round. Fall color often peaks in mid-October, says the park. Go on a weekday morning to beat the crowds (our pick)

### Before you go

* **Check conditions and closures.** Look at [NPS Cuyahoga Valley: current conditions and alerts](https://www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/conditions.htm) the day before. As of Oct 23, 2026, no closure is listed for the Ledges Trail, Ice Box Cave is closed, there is no drinking water at the Ledges Shelter (the fountain runs May 1 to Sept 15), and the Towpath Trail is closed between Boston Trailhead and Lock 29 through Nov 20, 2026.
* **Check the weather.** The park says fall nights can drop to freezing and lake-effect weather can change quickly. After rain or snow, the rock near the edges is slick. If snow is 3 inches or more, the Ledges Trailhead lot is plowed but the Kendall Lake Trailhead lot is not. [NPS Cuyahoga Valley: weather](https://www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/weather.htm)
* **Go early and lock up.** The park expects crowds on weekends and warm days from 10 am to 3 pm and warns about vehicle break-ins. Do not leave valuables in your car. [NPS Cuyahoga Valley: current conditions and alerts](https://www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/conditions.htm)
* **Tell someone your plan.** The park asks you to let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back. In an emergency, call 911 or Park Dispatch at 440-546-5945. The Boston Mill Visitor Center is at 440-717-3890. [NPS Cuyahoga Valley: safety](https://www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/safety.htm)
* **Know when to turn back.** Turn back if the rock is icy, if a section is signed closed, if a storm is coming in, or if the light is fading.

This list is a starting point, not a guarantee. Conditions change, so adjust it for your trip and your group.

### Trip-specific: permits and hazards

1. **Stay back from the cliff edges**The park’s safety page says to stay back from the edge on the Ledges, that footing is hazardous, and to use extra caution if it has rained or snowed recently. Keep children close at the overlook and along the top of the cliffs.Need itHave it

2. **Rocky, uneven trail**The loop is rocky and unpaved, with at least 80 feet of elevation change, and it is not wheelchair accessible. The park says to wear sturdy shoes, and waterproof boots when trails are wet. Take care on ice and snow in winter.Need itHave it

3. **Ticks in grass and brush**The park says ticks are most active from early spring to late fall. Stay on the trail, tuck your pants into your socks, wear light-colored clothes, use repellent and check yourself and your kids for ticks after the hike.Need itHave it

4. **No climbing, and Ice Box Cave is closed**Climbing on the rock formations is not allowed along the Virginia Kendall Ledges. Ice Box Cave, on the loop, is closed to protect bats from white-nose syndrome. The park asks you to report bat activity to Park Dispatch at 440-546-5945.Need itHave it

5. **Lots close at dusk**The park is open every day, but the Ledges area and its parking lots close at dusk and reopen in the morning. The loop takes about 1 to 2 hours, so start with plenty of daylight left. Short late-October days make this easy to misjudge.Need itHave it

6. **Crowds and car break-ins**As of Oct 23, 2026, the park warns of crowding on weekends and warm days from 10 am to 3 pm, and of vehicle break-ins: do not leave valuables in your car. Go early or on a weekday.Need itHave it

### The Ten Essentials [(NPS)](https://www.nps.gov/articles/10essentials.htm)

1. **Water**About 1 liter per person for the 1.8-mile loop, more if you add the longer walk from Kendall Lake (our suggestion). The park says not all trailheads have drinking water, so bring your own. The Ledges Shelter fountain only runs May 1 to Sept 15. The flush restrooms there are open all year.Need itHave it

One full bottle covers the 1.8-mile loop. Fill it at home, since the Ledges Shelter fountain is off after Sept 15.

4. **Headlamp**The park says to bring a flashlight if you hike late in the day. The lots close at dusk, and it gets dark early in the cracks and under the overhangs. Your phone isn’t a headlamp.Need itHave it
