### Before you go

* **Check conditions and closures.** Look at [NPS Big Bend: current conditions](https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/conditions.htm) the day before. As of Oct 24, 2026 (page last updated Oct 22), no closure is listed for the Lost Mine Trail or the Chisos Basin Road. Several other park roads are closed for weather until further notice, including the road from Cottonwood Campground to Santa Elena Canyon, Hot Springs Road and Old Ore Road. The Chisos Basin construction closure planned for 2026 was cancelled, so the Basin is open. [NPS Big Bend: Chisos Basin construction cancelled](https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/construction-cancelled.htm)
* **Check the weather.** Look at the Chisos Basin forecast, which runs about 10°F cooler than Panther Junction. Skip the ridge if thunderstorms are coming. [NPS Big Bend: weather](https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/weather.htm)
* **Go early.** The 15-car lot fills by 8 to 9 am from November through April, and roadside parking isn’t allowed. Have a backup hike in mind. [NPS Big Bend: Lost Mine Trail](https://www.nps.gov/places/lost-mine-trail.htm)
* **Tell someone your plan.** Cell service is limited or missing in much of the park, so tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. If you have signal in an emergency, call 911. The Chisos Basin Visitor Center is open 8:30 am to 4 pm, closed for lunch. Lock valuables out of sight in your car. [NPS Big Bend: safety](https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/safety.htm)
* **Know when to turn back.** Turn back if a storm is building, if you have used half your water, if anyone in your group is struggling, or if the light is fading.

This list is a starting point, not a guarantee. Conditions change, so adjust it for your trip and your group.

### Trip-specific: permits and hazards

1. **Mountain lion and black bear country**The park says the trail is in mountain lion and black bear habitat. Keep children close and don’t let them run ahead. If you meet a lion, don’t run: stand tall, raise your arms, back away slowly, throw rocks and yell if it comes closer, and fight back if attacked. If you see a bear, give it space, don’t run, and back away slowly. Report sightings to a ranger.Need itHave it

2. **Steep upper trail with log steps**The trail climbs 1,100 feet in 2.4 miles. Past the saddle at about mile 1, it climbs steeply through juniper, oak and pine with many log steps. The park asks you to stay on the switchbacks and not cut corners, and not to stack rocks. The park recommends sturdy shoes.Need itHave it

3. **Small lot, and no roadside parking**The trailhead lot holds about 15 vehicles and regularly fills by 8 to 9 am from November through April. Don’t park along the road. If the lot is full, pick another hike. The Chisos Basin Road is not recommended for RVs over 24 feet or trailers over 20 feet.Need itHave it

October averages a high of 74°F and a low of 53°F, and November 65°F and 45°F, but the park warns of freezing cold spells and daily swings of 30°F or more. ### The Ten Essentials [(NPS)](https://www.nps.gov/articles/10essentials.htm)

1. **Water: at least 3 liters per person**The park says to carry 1 liter of water per person per hour of hiking, and the hike takes about 3 hours. That is about 3 liters each, more on a warm day. The trailhead has no water, and the park says never to count on springs in the Chisos. Fill up before you drive up, and eat salty snacks, as the park advises.Need itHave it

2. **Food and extra food**Bring salty snacks, which the park recommends, and a little extra food. As of Oct 22, 2026, the Chisos Basin restaurant is closed. A food truck outside the lodge is open daily 8 am to 8 pm (closed 10 to 11 am), so pack your trail food from home.Need itHave it
